Our Coaches

Head Coach Fred Procter

Fred Procter is nationally recognized for coaching men’s and women’s high school, AAU and collegiate players for 30+ years. In 1987, he led the St Martin De Porres Eagles to a High School State Championship and was crowned High School Coach of the Year for the State of Michigan. After accepting a head coaching position at the University of Detroit Mercy, Procter advanced the Titans to the top of the Horizon Conference, winning Horizon Conference Coach of the Year honors after the 1993-94 season. Procter also excelled as an AAU coach, guiding numerous men’s and women’s players to on court success while winning several State championships.

 

Over the course of his career, many of Procter’s players have gone on to compete at Division I schools, including Daedra Charles, a Women's Basketball Hall of Fame inductee and National Collegiate Player of the Year who played for the legendary Pat Summitt at the University of Tennessee. Several of his protégés advanced to the NBA, WNBA and the US Olympic team – with others coaching at top schools like Coquese Washington, the former Head Women's Basketball Coach at Penn State University. Procter, a Detroit Catholic League Hall of Fame inductee, is also an accomplished basketball official having officiated a State Championship and at all college levels including Division I.

Associate Head Coach Nolan Procter

Nolan Procter is a former All-Conference basketball and football player at Birmingham Groves High School, and AAU basketball/track athlete. Upon graduation, he earned a Division 1 scholarship to the University of Akron, exceling as the team’s wide receiver. As the Women’s Basketball Graduate Assistant at the University of Akron, he provided on court coaching assistance - practice, drill and game plan development. Procter was also responsible for organizing the team’s annual summer youth, elite and high school basketball camps.

 For more than seven years, Procter has coached basketball players of all ages – working with AAU youth, high school teams and serving as a YMCA sports director.

His coaching philosophy is simple:

“I’m a firm believer in taking athletes back to the fundamentals. Teaching the game is a strength, and helping players understand the role practice plays in the development of their craft is vital.”

Pickleball Instructor Tom Wehner

Tom Wehner has been an enthusiastic pickleball player for more than eight years, dropping in at venues throughout the Detroit metropolitan area.  On the competitive level, he and his mixed doubles partner have medalled at the Michigan Senior Olympics, including taking the age-group gold at the 2018 Winter Games.  Tom has taught pickleball for the past three years.  He is currently certified by two groups that are recognized by the USAPA for their focus on pickleball education:

 - Certified Level 1 Instructor (International Pickleball Teaching     

    Professional Association)

 - Certified Pickleball Professional (Professional Pickleball Registry).
